With elk, mule deer and pronghorn antelope among the many animals trekking across Wyoming, the state’s Department of Transportation knows the importance of being attuned to their daily movements and seasonal migrations. That information is factored into new road projects to help save the lives of both humans and animals.

The Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program included as part of the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act (IIJA) is a new source of funding available to aid such mitigation efforts. The Summer issue of ATSSA’s Roadway Safety magazine, now available online, lays out the cost of human-animal collisions across the nation and examines the details of the program to help members understand how they can become involved.

The National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (NCUTCD) summer meeting addressed a variety of topics including traffic signals and vulnerable road users and provided an indication that work is progressing on the updated Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

In May, ATSSA President & CEO Stacy Tetschner sent a letter to Federal Highway Administration Administrator Shailen P. Bhatt urging the FHWA to publish the updated MUTCD by the May 15 deadline set forth in the U.S. Code. Tetschner acknowledged the "tremendous amount of work” needed to update the MUTCD but said he wanted to “stress how vital it is that this statutory deadline is met.”

Toward the end of the summer meeting of the NCUTCD, also referred to as “the National Committee,” federal officials made reference to August, suggesting work on the final rule is moving forward. However, there was no commitment that it would be published that month.

TRIP, a national transportation research nonprofit, has released updated statistics for its latest report on traffic fatalities and serious injury crashes nationwide.

The new information provides the latest statistics for each state to accompany its June report, “Addressing America’s Traffic Safety Crisis: Examining the Causes of Increasing U.S. Traffic Fatalities and Identifying Solutions to Improve Road User Safety.”

The updated information is available in the form of downloadable fact sheets for each state and includes information about each state’s surface transportation system and federal funding.

Apply by Nov. 1 to participate in ATSSA’s New Products Rollout (NPRO) to discover the future of roadway safety innovations. NPRO will be held during ATSSA’s 54th Annual Convention & Traffic Expo in San Diego, Feb. 2-6.

Exhibitors who introduced products after Jan. 1, 2021, are eligible to apply. This year’s earlier deadline is due to the Convention’s earlier date.

Entries accepted for NPRO will be included in the New Products Listing, which showcases the products to more than 3,700 roadway safety professionals who attend ATSSA’s Annual Convention & Traffic Expo, including listing on the Convention website and mobile app.

ATSSA’s Midyear Meeting features a panel on “Creating a Culture of Safety in the Workplace.”

Panelists include Doug Dolinar of Guidemark Inc., Kathi Holst of D2K Traffic Safety Inc., Chris Brookes of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Cameron Greene of ATSSA. Dave Krahulec of Horizon Signal Technologies will moderate.

The Midyear Meeting will be held Aug. 15-18 at the Loews Chicago O’Hare Hotel in Rosemont, Ill. Registration is now available. The hotel block closes July 24.

ATSSA now offers a Worker Protection Toolkit that will help the industry prevent roadway worker injuries and be equipped to respond in case of an injury or death.

“The overarching goal is to protect the lives of roadway workers,” said ATSSA Vice President of Member Services Donna Clark. “That is why this toolkit was designed to provide assistance in properly training workers. We recognize, however, that tragedies can occur so we also provide a roadmap for employers in case the worst happens.”

The Worker Protection Toolkit is the result of efforts by the Roadway Worker Protection Council. The RWP Council grew out of a Roadway Worker Protection Summit held during ATSSA’s 2021 Convention & Traffic Expo.

The House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee today released its draft reauthorization bill for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The bipartisan Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act would reauthorize the FAA aviation infrastructure and safety programs for the next five fiscal years, with a total investment of around $103 billion over the lifespan of the bill.

At ATSSA’s Annual Convention & Traffic Expo in February, the Government Relations Committee approved a policy allowing for the Association to get engaged with this reauthorization, with a specific focus on increased investment on airfield and curbside infrastructure. The bill released earlier today would provide $20 billion in grant funding for the Airport Improvement Program (AIP). The AIP is the main grant program responsible for funding airfield and access road focused infrastructure safety projects. The full list of AIP eligible projects is available online.

Roadway Worker Protection Council Chair Doug Dolinar told Roadway Safety magazine it’s time for a “paradigm shift” in how the industry looks at worker safety.

The Council spent the past year laser focused on that issue, producing a Worker Protection Toolkit that provides members aids for that effort. Details on the toolkit are included in the latest issue of Roadway Safety magazine.

ATSSA is known as the industry leader for roadway safety instruction and is looking to expand its team of master instructors.

With a continued emphasis on delivering top-notch training, ATSSA has opened the application process and is looking for individuals with experience in the roadway safety industry and who love to teach and share their expertise. A degree in civil engineering or equivalent experience or education as determined by ATSSA is needed as well as a flexible schedule and willingness to travel to deliver in-person courses.

ATSSA is partnering with The Utility Expo to provide roadway safety training—including flagger certification—during its Sept. 26-28 event.

A Safety Symposium offering 30 hours of roadway safety and education training takes place the first two days of The Utility Expo. This includes six morning workshops on Sept. 26 led by ATSSA Director of Innovation & Technical Services Eric Perry, ATSSA Manager of Innovation & Technical Services Melodie Matout and ATSSA Master Instructors Bill Birdwell and Tim Luttrell. It also includes two ATSSA four-hour courses the afternoon of Sept. 26 and a choice of two eight-hour courses on Sept. 27.

“Safety has always been a front-and-center issue for The Utility Expo. From the equipment that utility professionals use onsite, to the potentially hazardous environments they can find themselves in, safety needs to always be priority number one,” said The Utility Expo Show Director John Rozum. “The people at ATSSA understand that a lot of utility work is done in and around traffic and they have put together a great education agenda to help keep utility pros safe when the traffic cones come out.”
