FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Aug. 9, 2021) – The American Traffic Safety Services Foundation is pleased to announce donations totaling $3,500 from Enterprise Holdings Foundation, which will be used to support the Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship program.

The ATSS Foundation received $2,000 in June from the Enterprise Holdings Foundation at the request of Massana Construction Inc. of Tyrone, Ga., in memory of Michael Keyser Sr. and his son, Nathaniel Keyser, employees who were killed as a result of a work zone incident on Aug. 8, 2017, in Forney, Texas.

The ATSS Foundation received $1,500 in July from the Enterprise Holdings Foundation at the request of D2K Traffic Safety Inc. of Naperville, Ill.

Horizon Signal Technologies Inc. raised $53,000 for The ATSS Foundation through the auction of two trailer-mounted portable traffic signals, setting a fundraising record.

Street Smart Rental, based in Lino Lakes, Minn., made the winning bid of $49,000, with Horizon Signal adding $1,000 to bring the bid total to an even $50,000. In addition, GP Roadway Solutions of Honolulu, Hawaii, which also participated in the auction, donated $3,000, bringing the grand total to $53,000, said Lori Diaz, director of The ATSS Foundation.

Horizon Signal donated 100% of the proceeds from the May auction to The Foundation, which provides education about work zone safety and supports the families of people killed or permanently disabled in work zone incidents.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (June 2, 2021) – The American Traffic Safety Services Foundation awarded 11 Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarships to college and university students for the 2021-22 academic year. The Foundation also awarded two Chuck Bailey Memorial Scholarships for the upcoming academic year.

This year’s scholarship list includes two pairs of siblings: Cameron and Katie Hutt of Cleveland, Tenn., and Marcie and Maycie Walker of Dry Ridge, Ky.

The Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship Program was started in 2002 to provide financial assistance for post-high school education to dependents of roadway workers killed or permanently disabled in roadway work zones. The program is competitive and provides scholarships valued up to $10,000 per student each year. The program has awarded $348,000 since its inception.

At a regional event in Michigan two years ago, Rachel Snell met Dave Krahulec, chair of The ATSS Foundation Board, and asked if the Foundation had any materials she could use with her students.

She wanted to teach them about the importance of work zone safety, thinking that if they started at a young age, the message would be remembered when they got old enough for a driver’s license. They also could share it with their parents and encourage them to be alert when approaching and passing through a roadway work zone.

This week, Krahulec delivered 250 of the Foundation’s youth activity books to her when he traveled to Michigan for the national kickoff event for National Work Zone Awareness Week.

That's when the widow of a roadway worker found out her idea had inspired their creation.

Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Acting Administrator Stephanie Pollack joined ATSSA members today for day one of the Association’s two-day Legislative Briefing & Fly-In being held online this week.

Pollack stressed the importance of roadway safety and referenced next week’s National Work Zone Awareness Week as she engaged in a conversation with ATSSA Vice President of Engagement Nate Smith and responded to member questions.

More than 100 ATSSA members registered for the Legislative Briefing & Fly-In, which is organized by ATSSA’s Government Relations Team and is a member benefit. Members are scheduled to take part in more than 60 meetings with members of Congress and legislative staffers on Thursday.

ATSSA member Ver-Mac is auctioning two roadway safety products with all money raised going to The ATSS Foundation.

Bidding is now open and the auction runs through Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. EST.

The items being auctioned are:

• A PCMS-1500 Pro Series G3 portable changeable message sign that can be used for highway construction, smart work zones and special events.
• A Smart Arrowboard -25 LED, which is a trailer-mounted arrow board that can be used for highway construction, utility work, smart work zones and by departments of transportation (DOTs).

The American Traffic Safety Services Foundation (The ATSS Foundation) offers academic scholarships to the spouses and children of roadway workers killed or permanently disabled in work zone incidents to help them achieve their academic goals.

Applications for Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarships for the 2021-22 academic year are due by Feb. 15. Roadway Worker Memorial scholarships are competitive and awarded annually to help put family members on the road to a brilliant future.

Scholarships provide financial assistance up to $10,000 for post-secondary education. Applicants who demonstrate a strong commitment to volunteerism may be eligible for an additional $1,000 in honor of Chuck Bailey, a member of the roadway safety industry who died in 2002.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Dec. 7, 2020) – ATSSA President & CEO Stacy Tetschner announced a realignment of two of the Association’s vice presidents to better serve its members and most effectively address the multitude of vital issues facing the roadway safety infrastructure industry.

“This decision was made to address the many issues we face as an industry devoted to working toward zero deaths. I wanted to best utilize the talented people we have on our team,” Tetschner said.

Nate Smith’s role will expand to include Member Engagement as he continues leading ATSSA’s Government Relations strategy. Donna Clark becomes Vice President of Education and Technical Services.

ATSSA members’ support of The ATSS Foundation has helped it through a challenging year. “Giving Tuesday” is tomorrow and offers another opportunity to help the nonprofit Foundation finish strong.

The Foundation’s goal in this one-day effort is $5,000 and every bit helps.

This global day of giving offers a great way to support the work The Foundation does all year.

For anyone challenged to provide their children with meaningful activity amid pandemic concerns, The ATSS Foundation has a great option.

It’s offering a 32-page child’s guide for staying safe in roadway construction zones. The activity book is geared for ages 5-8 and includes 26 safety tips – one for each letter of the alphabet.

It offers a fun way to learn the ABCs of work zone safety with lessons like, “B is for Be prepared to STOP.”
