Incoming ATSSA President and CEO Stacy Tetschner visited our headquarters this morning for his first meeting with the Association’s staff. Outgoing President and CEO Roger Wentz, who retires at the end of this month, and Board Chair Greg Driskell introduced Tetschner to the group during a breakfast meeting after which Tetschner shared a bit about his vision for the Association.

Three members of the House of Representatives introduced a resolution this week recognizing the 50^th anniversary of the American Traffic Safety Services Association. The bi-partisan resolution was initiated by Rep. Rob Wittman, a Republican representing Virginia’s 1^st District, and Road Safety Caucus Chairs Bruce Westerman,  a Republican representing Arkansas’ 4^th District, and Chris Pappas, a Democrat representing New Hampshire’s 1^st District.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Feb. 6, 2020) – The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) announces the appointment of Stacy Tetschner as president and CEO, effective March 16. Tetschner succeeds Roger Wentz who is retiring after more than 22 years as president and CEO. Tetschner most recently served as president and CEO of the United Motorcoach Association (UMA). 

Tetschner is a seasoned and credentialed association professional with 20 years of experience as a CEO. He began his tenure at UMA in June of 2017 following a nationwide search. He is a Certified Association Executive (CAE), as well as a Fellow of the American Society of Association Executives (FASAE).

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Jan. 25, 2020) – The American Traffic Safety Services Association is pleased to announce winners of the Industry Achievement Award, the National Safety Award, Foundation Champion Award, Mark of Excellence Award and National Media Award. The awards were given as part of the 50^th Annual Convention & Expo, which runs from Jan. 24-28 in New Orleans. The winners were announced during this evening's 50^th Anniversary Gala.

ATSSA strives to keep roadway safety on the minds of stakeholders from legislators on Capitol Hill to officials with Departments of Transportation (DOTs) across the country. Therefore, the Association advocates for funds available through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), a core federal aid program created to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads including non-state-owned roads and roads of tribal or Indian lands.

National work zone statistics for fatalities demonstrate a critical need for training roadway safety workers. From 2016 to 2017, fatalities in work zones increased from 782 to 799 – a 2 percent increase, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) website.

In recent years, there has been an uptick in collaboration between entities within the roadway safety infrastructure and automotive industries as Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) technologies progress and enter U.S. roadways. In a sweeping effort to ensure traffic control devices and roadway infrastructure effectively support the Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) of CAVs, manufacturers and groups like the Automotive Safety Council, 3M, SAE International, and ATSSA are working together to uncover the gaps in information and needs to help these vehicles perform at an optimum level. 

Integrated Corridor Management (ICM) initiatives are basic plans that connect roadway users, the road, and work zones and allow for effective communication. They are vital to advancing roadway safety and countering common challenges such as congestion, traffic delays, and crashes.

The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), continuing in its role as the leader in roadway safety infrastructure, has established a Traffic Signals Unit membership category.
