Prestigious national award commends fair and balanced transportation reporting

TAMPA, Fla. (February 10, 2019) – The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) announced the winner of the 2018 National Media Award at the 49th Annual Convention & Traffic Expo, in Tampa, Florida on Feb. 10.

The winner of the award is David McGee, senior reporter at the Bristol Herald Courier in Bristol, Virginia.

David McGeeThe ATSSA National Media Award is awarded to journalists, reporters, and news organizations that conduct fair, balanced, and informative reporting on issues related to transportation and roadway safety. Nominations are submitted by communications offices at state Departments of Transportation (DOTs).

McGee has been a reporter with the Bristol Herald Courier and regularly covers Bristol, Virginia government, state government, and transportation issues. McGee has also been a recipient of the 2018 Scripps Howard Award for local journalism, and the Associated Press Media Editors’ Public Service Award.

Some of McGee’s recent transportation reporting includes pieces on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) efforts to study Interstate 81 corridor improvements, an effort meant to decrease congestion and the incidence of roadway crashes.

McGee was nominated by Michelle Earl of the VDOT Bristol Communications Office.

"David thoughtfully and fairly covers issues that matter to the people of northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia. To have the opportunity to recognize a reporter as well-regarded as David McGee is an honor,” said Earl.
