ATSSA presents 2018 National Safety Award at 49th Annual Convention & Traffic Expo

Association recognizes individual for outstanding achievements in advancing roadway safety

TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 10, 2018) – Today, ATSSA announced the winner of its National Safety Award. Longtime ATSSA member Scott McCanna, the senior transportation project engineer for David Evans and Associates, Inc., was presented with the safety award during the Opening General Session of the American Traffic Safety Services Association’s (ATSSA’s) 49th Annual Convention & Traffic Expo in Tampa Bay, Florida.

ATSSA’s National Safety Award recognizes public officials who have made extraordinary and significant contributions to the safety of America’s highways. ATSSA members nominate individuals who are employed by a government agency or have retired from a government agency within two years.

“ATSSA’s National Safety Award honors those who have worked tirelessly to promote roadway safety and increase public awareness of work zones,” said ATSSA President & CEO Roger Wentz. “Scott joined our association more than a decade ago and we’ve been honored to work with him in our shared commitment in achieving Toward Zero Deaths on our nation’s roadways.”

McCanna has nearly 30 years of experience working as a state work zone engineer with the Oregon Department of Transportation and recently founded his own engineering consulting firm in 2013 before assuming his new role at David Evans and Associates, Inc.

“I've been a member of ATSSA for more than 15 years. Since becoming involved with the roadway safety association, participating with the Northwest Chapter of ATSSA, and attending ATSSA events, I have the upmost respect for ATSSA and everything they've done,” McCanna said. “My level of support and investment that I've made into ATSSA, in return for everything the association has done for me, is one of the highlights of my calendar year. That's how important these efforts are to me.”

McCanna said ATSSA’s commitments to supporting industry members in ways such as offering scholarships for state employees to attend various events shows the association’s level of commitment to getting all members of the industry to engage with one another.

“Receiving ATSSA's National Safety Award is such a high honor,” said McCanna. “I cannot believe I am receiving the same award that some of my fellow colleagues have been honored with. I'm absolutely flattered to be in that mixed company. It's an amazing feeling. This is a career level event and I'm honored to receive it.”

McCanna specializes in Temporary Traffic Control Plan (TCP) design; contract specification writing; work zone safety measures, practices, technologies and devices; work zone design training and technical program development and management.

Additionally, McCanna is equipped to serve as an expert witness services for work zone and other roadway-related crashes; is knowledgeable about temporary traffic control standards and requirements; and has experience with event planning and TCP designs for bicycle, running, and triathlon events on public roads.
