ATSSA’s Legislative Briefing & Virtual Fly-In starts Tuesday

Two-day event includes briefing and meetings with legislators

ATSSA’s Legislative Briefing & Virtual Fly-In starts Tuesday with an afternoon full of legislative updates from the Government Relations Team and members of Congress.

Tuesday's activities run from 1-5 p.m. EDT. The two-day event also includes virtual meetings with legislators on Wednesday, providing ATSSA members the opportunity to interact directly with their federal legislators and congressional staff and drive their messages to Capitol Hill.

This annual event provides ATSSA members training in advocacy with federal legislators and gives them the opportunity to develop long lasting relationships with members of Congress. They can then take the skills home and continue using them to convey our industry’s priorities to elected officials at all levels of government.

Many ATSSA members take part each year but the this year’s virtual platform provides an easy way for people who have never taken part to learn what legislative advocacy is about without the investment of time and travel in the traditional format in Washington, D.C.

“If you’ve never taken advantage of this complementary member benefit before, this is the ideal way to gain your first taste of legislative advocacy,” said ATSSA Vice President of Government Relations Nate Smith. “Advocating for roadway safety is something everyone should take part in because every voice counts. The annual Legislative Briefing & Fly-In provides a tremendous opportunity to affect positive change for our industry and save lives on U.S. roadways.”

This annual event is free and only open to ATSSA members as a benefit of membership.

The annual Legislative Briefing & Fly-in is traditionally held in spring, but the COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders forced a postponement to this month. The event was originally set for in-person participation but moved to the virtual format after the host hotel announced it would not re-open until October. In addition, Congress is not expected to be open for in-person meetings this fall.

Registration for the two-day event officially closed last week but members who didn’t have the opportunity to sign up until now can sign up today to observe the first day’s session. However, they will be unable to meet with legislators on Wednesday as those meetings are scheduled in advance.

To take part in the virtual event, people must have internet access and the use of a computer, tablet or smart phone.
