Workplace Giving programs provide a way for companies and their teams to enjoy the satisfaction of helping support people impacted by roadway work zone tragedies.

Participants can experience the joy of seeing a student pursue career goals thanks to a college scholarship, help a child work toward healing after the loss of a parent in a work zone incident through an Experience Camp, feel the gratification of knowing children are being taught about work zone safety through the use of activity books, and know the grave risks of roadway work zones are being communicated through the National Work Zone Memorial.

Those are just some of the ways The ATSS Foundation carries out its mission of promoting roadway safety through charitable giving and public awareness.

The last time Cody Garner saw his father was when he dropped him at football practice. Hours later, his father was killed in a work zone accident.

Cody was just beginning his sophomore year of high school when he lost his father. Today he’s starting his senior year at the University of Arkansas where he is pursuing a double major and a double minor. He’s grateful to the American Traffic Safety Services Foundation for the Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship he has received each year of his college studies.

Though this year’s pandemic has challenged people in countless ways, The Foundation still needs help to carry out the programs it offers to support individuals and families impacted by work zone incidents.

At a time when lives are restricted due to the global pandemic and many people are looking for ways to make a difference, The ATSS Foundation has an option.

The Foundation needs volunteers to help gather the names of men and women who lost their lives in work zone incidents so they can be honored by inclusion on the  National Work Zone Memorial.

“Families whose lives have been marked by work zone tragedies continue to need our help. One way to support them while maintaining social distancing and without even leaving your home is to help gather names of people who should be honored and remembered on the Memorial,” said Foundation Associate Director Lori Diaz.

Midyear Digital offers a simple equation for maximizing your gift to the American Traffic Safety Services Foundation.

With this year’s virtual format, travel costs are eliminated so consider donating what you would have spent on a cab or Uber. Plus, Foundation sponsors are matching donations so your donation will be multiplied as much as tenfold.

Opportunities are now available to partner with The American Traffic Safety Services Foundation to support families whose lives have been impacted by work zone tragedies and to help promote the importance of safe driving through work zones.

Foundation sponsors are companies and organizations committed to the core purpose of The Foundation’s programs. Sponsors support initiatives such as maintenance of the physical National Work Zone Memorial, honoring the lives of roadway workers lost or permanently disabled in work zone crashes, and educating the public on the Toward Zero Deaths initiative.

Registration is now open for ATSSA’s Midyear Digital meeting to be held online from Aug. 24-27. This year’s meeting will be held in a fully digitized format with a variety of components reimagined due to the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing restrictions.  Inspiring real-world solutions, Midyear Digital will kick off with a 45-minute virtual town hall style session that will include key transportation professionals discussing prominent industry issues and innovations. The event will then continue with virtual committee and council meetings.

Help shape the Association’s policies and initiatives in the coming year by participating in Midyear Digital. Fahad Alhajri is a relative newcomer to the transportation industry but is keenly interested in work zone safety and pursuing his goals of becoming the state work zone engineer for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and a national expert in temporary traffic control.

So when he learned about the Marty Weed Engineering Scholarship that would cover travel expenses up to $1,500 to attend ATSSA’s Annual Convention & Traffic Expo, he submitted an application.

Alhajri and Lance McDonald of the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) were the first two recipients of the scholarship.

ATSSA member Ver-Mac is auctioning a portable changeable message sign to benefit the American Traffic Safety Services Foundation. Bidding is now open and runs through March 27 with all proceeds going to the Foundation. 

As part of the American Traffic Safety Services Foundation’s (ATSS Foundation) mission to support the loved ones of those impacted by work zone crashes, the nonprofit’s scholarship programs offer healing and educational opportunities. The Foundation offers three scholarship programs: the Roadway Worker Memorial Scholarship, the Experience Camps Travel Scholarship and the Marty Weed Engineering Scholarship. 

The ATSS Foundation received $5,335 in online donations during GivingTuesday, nearly reaching its goal of $5,500 for the event, an achievement Foundation President David Krahulec celebrated this morning.
