ATSSA’s Midyear Meeting kicks off on Tuesday, launching the annual collaboration of industry insiders gathered to address the latest innovations and challenges in the roadway safety infrastructure industry.

This year’s event takes place in Providence, R.I., where Wednesday’s agenda includes a panel discussion on workforce, materials and supply chain issues.

“Construction and transportation industry challenges – potholes on the industry highway” will be moderated by ATSSA Vice President of Engagement Nate Smith. Panelists include Kate Fox Wood, senior director of government relations with the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, Jonathan Starks of FTR, who is a longtime member of the freight industry, and Sterling Wiggins with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The 1-hour session starts at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and will focus on the state of affairs across the construction and transportation industries and what the path forward may look like.

The meeting is tailored to national committee members and friends to learn, network and build leadership skills.

“These meetings are critical to the work of our Association,” said ATSSA President & CEO Stacy Tetschner. “We lay the groundwork for many efforts and innovations for advancing roadway safety at our committee and council meetings. We were pleased by last year’s record-breaking attendance of 381 and hope to exceed that this year as we work to develop roadway safety plans that utilize the funding approved in the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act.”

ATSSA’s Midyear Meeting provided bountiful opportunities to reconnect, explore solutions to roadway safety infrastructure challenges, socialize over pickleball and hear from automotive industry experts.

ATSSA’s next big event is the 52^nd Annual Convention & Traffic Expo in Tampa, Fla., Feb. 11-15.

Ideas flowed today as ATSSA’s Roadway Worker Protection Council held its first meeting during the Midyear Meeting in Kansas City, Mo.

Nearly 30 people took part where it was agreed the two primary focus areas are mitigating risk in work zones and creating a support plan to be ready when incidents occur.

Doug Dolinar, who lost an employee to a work zone incident last August, was appointed as council chair  and ATSS Foundation Board Chair Dave Krahulec was appointed as vice chair for today’s meeting. An election of officers will take place when the council meets during the 52^nd Annual Convention & Traffic Expo in Tampa, Fla., in February.

The plan is to hold the Roadway Worker Protection Council meeting the morning of Monday, Feb. 14 to avoid conflicts with other council and committee meetings at Convention. The Convention & Traffic Expo will be held Feb. 11-15.

ATSSA’s 2021 Midyear Meeting kicks off this afternoon in Kansas City, Mo.

More than 300 people have registered for the event that runs through Friday and is being held in hybrid fashion with some attending in person at the Loews Kansas City Hotel and others taking part online.

The week includes the first meeting of the Roadway Worker Protection Council, which takes place Wednesday and evolved from a Roadway Worker Protection Summit held during this year’s Convention and Traffic Expo.

The Heart of America ATSSA Chapter is hosting a fundraiser for The ATSS Foundation during the Midyear Meeting in Kansas City, Mo. in August.

Enjoy pickleball, cornhole and other yard games while dining at Chicken N Pickle, a popular Kansas City restaurant that combines food and recreation. The HOA-ATSSA event provides opportunities for networking with other roadway safety professionals. Transportation will be available to and from the host hotel.

Net proceeds benefit The Foundation, which is the charitable arm of ATSSA. It was formed in 1988 with the core purpose to promote roadway safety through charitable giving and public awareness programs.

This year’s Midyear Meeting adds a new council focused on roadway worker protection to the lineup.

The addition evolved from the Roadway Worker Protection Summit, which was heavily attended during ATSSA’s 2021 Annual Convention & Traffic Expo held online in February, said ATSSA Vice President of Education and Technical Services Donna Clark.

She said the topic resonates with everyone in the roadway safety industry and, unfortunately, the statistics on injuries and deaths aren’t improving.

Registration is now open for the 2021 Midyear Meeting in Kansas City, Mo., Aug. 17-20.

This in-person event takes place at the Loews Kansas City Hotel, located within walking distance of key downtown attractions.

Meet with ATSSA members and industry experts and help shape the Association’s policies and initiatives for the coming year by participating in Midyear committee and council meetings. This event provides opportunities to network and share with more than 300 like-minded ATSSA members from around the country committed to innovation and advancement of roadway safety infrastructure.

ATSSA wrapped up its first Midyear Digital event on Thursday with Rep. Pete Stauber (R-Minn.) and Federal Highway Administration  (FHWA) Administrator Nicole R. Nason sharing insights during the Government Relations Committee Meeting.

Stauber said he’s eager for Congress to address the nation’s infrastructure needs and the federal highway bill known as the FAST Act, which is set to expire Sept. 30.

He serves on the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and urged ATSSA members to reach out to committee members and ranking members of Congress to get their priorities heard. The first-term Congressman representing Minnesota’s 8^th District said he’s eager to get legislation passed and isn’t concerned about getting credit for his role.

ATSSA held its first Midyear Digital event from Monday through Thursday. Nearly 400 people took part in the committee and council meetings that tackled roadway safety infrastructure issues.

The session includes remarks from Minnesota Department of Transportation Deputy Commissioner and Chief Engineer Nancy Daubenberger. Midyear had been planned for Minnesota before COVID-19 shifted the annual Midyear Meeting to a fully virtual platform for the first-ever Midyear Digital.

Opening General Session also featured a town hall style panel moderated by ATSSA Vice President of Government Relations Nate Smith. The three panelists offered their “6:60:6 Predictions” for the roadway safety industry.
