Roadway safety in a cooperative automated world

Highway automation is not years away, or even days away. It’s here now, causing a number of state transportation agencies to react with initiatives related to preparing and supporting Connected Automated Vehicles (CAVs) on U.S. roadways.


Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs)

Cooperative Automated Transportation (CAT) deals with CAVs, which are vehicles capable of driving on their own with limited or no human involvement in navigation and control. Per the definition adopted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are six levels of automation (Levels 0-2: driver assistance and Levels 3-5: HAV), each of which requires its own specification and marketplace considerations.


Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) and Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs)

For traffic safety, vehicle-to-everything communications is the wireless exchange of critical safety and operational data between vehicles and anything else. The "X" could be roadway infrastructure, other vehicles, roadway workers or other safety and communication devices. ATSSA members are at the forefront of these technologies, and are working with stakeholders across new industries to see these innovations come to life.


Sensor Technology

CAVs rely on three main groups of sensors: camera, radar, and Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). The camera sensors capture moving objects and the outlines of roadway devices to get speed and distance data. Short- and long-range radar sensors work to detect traffic from the front and the back of CAVs. LIDAR systems produce three-dimensional images of both moving and stationary objects.

ATSSA Announces Innovation Awards at 50th Annual Convention & Traffic Expo

Traffic control and infrastructure devices recognized at largest U.S. tradeshow for roadway safety products and services

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Jan. 28, 2020) – Three exhibitors at ATSSA’s 50th Annual Convention & Traffic Expo received Innovation Awards today in recognition of new products created by their companies that contribute to the industry’s mission of advancing roadway safety and working Toward Zero Deaths.

The new products from 2019 were evaluated by a panel of judges made up of Department of Transportation personnel. Judges got their first look at the items on Sunday during the New Products Rollout. Twenty items from companies around the country were chosen for review.

Products from Royal Innovative Solutions, Pi Variables and VER-MAC were selected as first, second and third place, respectively. They were chosen on the criteria of lifesaving qualities, degree of need, innovation, design and eligibility under the Highway Safety Improvement Program. Company representatives then had the opportunity to talk about their products during ATSSA’s Circle of Innovation event, also held today.

“We look forward to the New Product Rollout each year to see the latest ideas for improving roadway safety,” said Eric Perry, ATSSA’s Director of Innovation & Technical Services. “These three products clearly stood out to the judges as exceptional ideas.”

The convention and traffic expo is being held this year in New Orleans. It kicked off a yearlong celebration of the Association’s 50th anniversary. More than 3,600 people are taking part in the convention, which ends today. It began on Jan. 24 with two events to support The ATSS Foundation, which assists the families of roadway workers killed or permanently disabled as a result of a work zone crash.

The ATSSA Innovation Awards are held annually as part of ATSSA’s annual convention and traffic expo.

“Roadway safety manufacturers are a critical component to saving lives on our nation’s roads,” Perry said. “ATSSA’s annual convention and expo is the place to see the latest roadway safety products being produced nationwide. The Innovation Awards recognize outstanding efforts by the industry to advance roadway safety and, hopefully, save lives.”

First place: Royal Innovative Solutions, Coopersburg, Pa.

Product: Virtual Reality Training - interactive programs simulate real-life scenarios like retrieving cones from the roadway with traffic passing at low to high speeds.
