Roadway Safety Leadership Academy

In conjunction with the 2025 Midyear Meeting in Milwaukee, Wis., ATSSA will hold part one of the new 8-part leadership program, which will stretch over nine months. It is designed to provide participants the skills and insights needed to become effective leaders within the roadway safety infrastructure industry as well as within their companies.

Skills enhancement will focus on three areas: industry knowledge and insights, people and business management, and strategic leadership.

Applications for ATSSA members to participate in the Roadway Safety Leadership Academy must be submitted by May 15, 2025.

Part 1: August

The Roadway Safety Leadership Academy will begin in August 2025 in Milwaukee, Wis., where participants will meet one another as well as program mentors during a reception organized in conjunction with the Midyear Meeting. Participants also will be expected to participate in the Association’s Midyear committee and council meetings.

Part 2: SEPTEMBER

In September 2025, a leadership-specific class will convene over two days in-person at a central location within the U.S. The class will include an assessment of personal strengths based on the CliftonStrengths StrengthsFinder program and strategic planning for leaders.

Parts 3-8: October-March

Between October and March, the Leadership Academy group will convene four times via video conference for 1-2 hours per session to explore the following topics:

  • Role of crash testing in roadway safety
  • Understanding the other organizations in our industry
  • The purpose of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (NCUTCD)
  • How innovations in roadway safety develop and come to market
  • Insights into the Approved Product List/Qualified Product List (APL/QPL) processes
  • Five stages of leadership
  • The value of developing a professional network, personal brand and communication style
  • Insights into the role of state departments of transportation (DOTs) and federal agencies involved in the industry

The February 2026 meeting will be held for 1 hour at ATSSA's Convention & Traffic Expo, Feb. 20-24, in Houston. Participants will enjoy a reception with ATSSA leaders and include face-to-face program discussion time with the Board of Directors and fellow classmates.

Conclusion & Graduation: April

Participants are expected to attend ATSSA’s Annual Convention & Traffic Expo in Houston in February 2026, then the program will wrap up in April with an in-person event in Washington, D.C., to include media and spokesperson training. That training will be held on the first day of ATSSA’s two-day Legislative Briefing & Fly-In, which will provide advocacy preparation before members travel to Capitol Hill to discuss industry issues with members of Congress.

A graduation celebration including ATSSA and ATSS Foundation leaders will be held after the Fly-In event.

Participate in the Roadway Safety Leadership Academy

To apply for the 2025-26 ATSSA Roadway Safety Leadership Academy, you must be an ATSSA member. Please complete and submit this application no later than Thursday, May 15, 2025.

ATTENDANCE POLICY AND EVENTS

To successfully complete the program, it is required that participants attend at least 80% of the scheduled classes and events to receive a graduation certificate.

SELECTION AND TUITION

Applicants will receive notification of selection by Thursday, June 5, 2025.

If selected, you will be billed for the $2,900 non-refundable tuition. Payment is due no later than Thursday, June 19, 2025.
