ATSSA ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING DEADLY CRASH IN MASSACHUSETTS

Three roadway workers killed on I-91 in West Springfield

In response to the crash that killed three roadway workers on March 28, 2025, in West Springfield, Mass., both the president and CEO of ATSSA and the chapter president of the New England ATSSA Chapter have issued statements.

Stacy Tetschner, ATSSA President and CEO: “The tragic incident on March 28, 2025, involving the loss of three Premier Fence employees in West Springfield, is the largest reported work zone fatality in Massachusetts history, according to the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse. Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of these individuals. This heartbreaking event is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those working to keep our roads safe. We extend our gratitude to the local authorities and emergency responders for their ongoing efforts in investigating this incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those involved, especially the families, the ATSSA member company, Premier Fence, our New England ATSSA Chapter and the communities mourning this tremendous loss.”

According to news reports a driver was arrested in connection with striking and killing three roadway workers on Interstate 91 in West Springfield early Friday morning at the ramp for exit 10A.

At a news conference held at 1 p.m., Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni said the crash was an established worksite repairing guardrails at the scene. He also indicated speed was a factor.
