This “Guidelines on the Use of Low-Profile Portable Concrete Barrier in Low to Moderate Speed Work Zones” 8.5 x 11″ booklet will assist in walking through guidelines on the use of low-profile portable concrete barriers. Given a variety of considerations for which type of temporary traffic control device to use in work zone situations, many agencies have developed guidelines for when to use positive protection and characteristics to consider when designing or setting use policies on a variety of project types. Some of the most common needs for protection include worker exposure to traffic, traffic exposure to drop-off conditions and separation of opposing traffic flows. The Temporary Traffic Control Devices Rule (23 CFR 630 Subpart K) requires consideration of positive protection devices in work zone situations that place workers at increased risk from motorized traffic and where positive protection devices offer the highest potential for increased safety for workers and road users.

This product was developed under the Work Zone Safety Grant, awarded to ATSSA by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
