Work Zone Performance Measures

Description: The purpose of this module to provide users with an understanding of the types of performance measures used to evaluate work zones and how to use them. The module covers how to develop work zone performance measures, the rationale for using performance measures for work zone safety and performance measurement methodology.

Shadow Vehicles for Work Zones

Description: This training module provides criteria for the use of shadow vehicles and Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) in work zones. Module materials are based on the product “Field Guide for the Use and Placement of Shadow Vehicles in Work Zones.” It is also based on material from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Roadside Design Guide. The course will explore the different types of protective vehicles, show the proper use of shadow vehicles, define a TMA and identify when to use a shadow vehicle or TMA.

High-Visibility Safety Apparel in Work Zones

Description: Provides guidance on selecting high-visibility safety apparel including appropriate situations where each type of apparel is required or recommended.

Pedestrian Safety and Accessibility in Work Zones

Description: Outlines pedestrian considerations during each project phase including: planning, design, construction and maintenance.

Pedestrians and Americans with Disabilities in Work Zone

Description: This module discusses why pedestrian safety and accessibility must be provided in work zones. In this module participants will learn how pedestrians, including the disabled, should be considered and provided for during the development and implementation of the traffic control plan. This module also will show participants how to identify good practices and effective solutions to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility.

Overview of the MUTCD Part 6: Temporary Traffic Control

Description: This presentation introduces students to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), its importance in achieving uniformity nationwide and its levels of compliance. It emphasizes how uniformity in temporary traffic control (TTC) helps improve the safety of both highway users and workers. The module introduces students to the MUTCD’s seven fundamental principles of TTC and how to use them in achieving work zone safety and mobility. Also addressed are component parts of typical work zones and their minimum requirements in accordance with the MUTCD: Advance Warning Area, Transition (including tapers), Activity Area (traffic spaces and buffers) and Termination Area.
