Worker Protection Toolkit

Developed by the Roadway Worker Protection Council, the Worker Protection Toolkit provides ATSSA members and industry professionals with checklists for steps to take in case of an injury or death and a training guide to help employers prepare their employees to safely RESPOND TO INCIDENTS in the field.

The toolkit now includes 10 documents and is available for free digital download.

• Work Zone Terminology for New Employees – 12-page document with color images and illustrations designed for new employees and traffic control technicians
• Advanced Work Zone Terminology – Added in late 2023, this 10-page document includes color images and illustrations designed for established employees and traffic control technicians or supervisors
• Work Zone Training and Resource Guide – Excel chart for tracking the training of eight categories of employees
• Incident Investigation Checklists – 11 pages of checklists and incident reports designed for crews/employees and managers/owners
• Emergency Response (Management) – Checklist designed for management to use as an emergency response resource
• Emergency Response (Additional recommendations) – Checklist of recommendations for management
• Emergency Scene Response (Field Document) – Steps for workers or management to use out in the field in an emergency situation
• Model Training Specifications – Added in early 2024, this 7-page document includes language intended to address the essential elements of roadway safety professionals’ duties and responsibilities
• Guidance for AFAD Operators – Added in late 2024, this guidance sheet details the proper use and applications for Automated Flagging Assistance Devices (AFADs).
• Traffic Control Hands-On Practice – Added in early 2025, this checklist guide suggests helpful hands-on activities to assist in concept retention for individuals new to traffic control once classroom training has been completed.
